AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA
There are two coin production mints in Australia: the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint. The RAM produces the currencies of the day, and the silver coins are 0.925 pure. The 89 Kookaburra and 90 Cockatoo are RAM pieces of the ＾Birds of Australia Series￣ made in standard and piedfort sizes. RAM also produces the Kangaroo series. The Perth Mint has produced all of the 0.999 pure silver Bullion Coins since 1990.
KOOKABURRA: common name for four species of birds of the family Alcedinidae KINGFISHER, living in Australia and New Guinea. The laughing kookaburra, Dacelo novaeguineae, a stocky grayish bird about 46 cm (about 18 in) long, is the largest member of the family. It rarely catches fish, living mainly on large insects, mice, small birds, and small snakes. Its raucous call, which inspired its common nickname of ＾laughing jackass,￣ is often heard on television and motion picture soundtracks to typify ＾jungle sounds.￣ Originally native to eastern Australia, this species was successfully introduced into the western part of the continent. A slightly smaller species, the blue-winged kookaburra, D. leachii, occurs in northern Australia; the two species overlap in Queensland. Two other species live in New Guinea.
KOOKABURRA 1 OZ SILVER
The Kookaburra is one of the major silver bullion coin to change its design yearly. It is issued in four popular sizes, 1oz., 2oz., 10oz. and kilo (32.5 oz. - the world¨s largest silver bullion coin) through the Perth Mint. The official bullion 1 oz series started in 1990, although 2 Kookaburra coins (1oz & 2oz piedfort) were issued as the first in the Australian Bird series by the Royal Australian Mint in 1989. Many variations exist with extra stamps or seals (｀privies¨) issued for special occasions & coin shows. The mirrored proof design of one year (issued from 1990 to 2005) became the model for the frosted uncirculated, or ＾specimen￣, of the next. The last proof (2005) had a blue tint. Gold plated ＾specimens￣ have been mint issued since 2004.
